A common misconception is that wearing earplugs does not allow you to hear environmental sounds when riding. It is quite the opposite, by reducing the wind noise, the necessary ambient sounds such as traffic, car horns and sirens are heard better. Wind noise is a wide frequency band noise that can mask ambient sounds. Wearing earplugs is like rolling up your car window when driving on the highway- by reducing the wind noise, you actually hear better. A rider is exposed to much more wind noise than when in a car, so by wearing earplugs, you hear better those environmental sounds that are important for safe riding.
